One year blogging today!! When I first started this blog, I wrote a list of 10 things that I wanted to accomplish but I had no expectations that I would be able to cross off all 10 things within the first year of blogging. I am planning to do a much more comprehensive post about my first year blogging but I just finished my last final of the quarter today so I’m bringing you something a little less celebratory (and easier for me to write!) I recently picked up the NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in San Paulo and thought I’d do a review on it.
What you need to know: These retail for $6 and comes in 22 shades, however my experience is most stores will have less than half the shades. Comes with a doe foot applicator. Product contains a little under 0.3 oz. A hybrid lipstick-lipgloss.
I never review products with pictures of the product on myself but this review is not as helpful without these action shots. I have yet to master the selfie on even my iPhone so these were difficult for me to take with my camera, even when I tried with a remote! I think you can get the idea though :)
Below is my natural lip with only some regular Chapstick on it. I have naturally pigmented lips and typically more pigment around the edge of my lips, just for reference.
Below is with 1 coat of the NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream. You can see that although there is color payoff, it’s not completely opaque yet and especially near the bottom of my lip, it’s sheer.
There, that’s a little better. The color is more opaque now. I seem to have missed the center of my lips a bit but that gets fixed later by rubbing your lips together.
After 1 hour: It took quite some time for the product to dry to less of a tacky finish. When it isn’t completely dry, the color will transfer. (I tested this by pressing my lips to the back of my hand.) At 1 hour, they were pretty much dry and the transfer is very minimal.
After 3 hours: The product started settling into the lines on my lips and it started feeling mildly uncomfortable. I thought it was accentuating the dryness. At this point, it was not transferring to my hand.
Below (aside from my hair being even more disheveled ha!) is the product on my lips after 6 hours and eating dinner.
You can see that the color has now somewhat stained my lips so there is still a good amount of color. Even after drinking and eating, the color has only started feathering out on the outer bottom corners of my lips. However, at this point my lips were screaming for some lip balm and the product was definitely settling into lines and making my lips look dehydrated.
Final thoughts: This product is fun and unique, granted you can get your hands on the array of colors. You need at least two coats for opaqueness (at least on pigmented lips) but once it’s on, the color will last quite some time. It’s a must that you exfoliate your lips before using this! It was fun to play with and I like that San Paulo is a fun strawberry shade that is great for transitioning into spring/summer but I don’t think this product is the one for me.
Who should use this product? I think this product is wonderful if you need some color for only a few hours, but not an all day product that you could wear at work all day. This is especially good for people who don’t struggle with dryness on their lips. My last tip is if you use lip plumpers, apply a plumping gloss before you wear this because it can help fill out the lines in your lips and reduce the amount of product that sinks into unsightly ridges.
I hope that’s helpful! While it’s not my favorite product, it has major potential and for the right person, I see this as a great lip product that’s affordable. You can buy it here.
