September was weird. There were a plethora of natural (and manmade) disasters around the world, an endless amount of political drama, and even odd weather in Seattle. It went from summer to winter to fall all within two weeks! Throw in some other frustrations I can’t write about and it was just a lot. Though September lacked in some areas, it redeemed itself by presenting lots of opportunities to be in good company. No longer being in college and living in the same city as all my friends does present a challenge when making plans. Somehow this month the stars aligned a lot and I had a full calendar! My heart is so full from all the brunch dates, old friend reunions, and more.
Life this month was more about experiences and I certainly feel rich from them! I never put myself on official spending bans however I’m pretty conscious about what I consume. As a blogger who works with companies who gift me product sometimes, it can feel backwards to accept things when I am trying to declutter my things at the same time. I deal with this contradiction frequently! Writing these favorites posts at the end of every month actually helps me realize what I really love and want to keep. It makes the process of donating clothes or throwing away makeup much easier this way!
As usual, there are a variety of favorites that stood out this month. Keep on reading and see what made the cut!
Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in ‘145 Devil Wears Nada‘ – As much as I like my essie colors, sometimes you can’t beat a classic nail care brand like Sally Hansen. I used to have the most perfect pale pink that I wore on all my vacations. (That’s how you know I really love a nail color.) When it ran out, I went looking for it but had bad luck. I ended up with 145 because of the clever name. In case you didn’t know, The Devil Wears Prada is one of my all time favorite movies. I’m obsessed with Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway! I can’t rewatch many movies but this is one of the special exceptions. Anyway, turns out this opaque nude is actually as good as the name. I will be rocking this allllll fall and winter long. Best part? It’s cheap. It stays on just fine for about 5-6 days then starts chipping which is good enough in my book.
Maybelline Lash Sensational Luscious Mascara – Drugstore mascaras don’t usually boast nice packaging but you guys, this packaging is pretty with matte black. The product performs just as well too. I’ve raved about Maybelline mascaras so many times in the past but let me say again: Maybelline makes the best drugstore mascaras. I have used this brand for years and years because it’s so good and dirt cheap. Since you have to replace mascaras so often, there’s no point in my eyes to pay triple (or more) for a product that works the same. I generally don’t like brushes that aren’t full but this unique comb like brush is actually great. Although I have thin lashes, the brush is able to coat them generously. Mine is the waterproof version and it holds my curl all day long!
Caslon Tie Front Shirt (long sleeve version here!) – I don’t wear a lot of t-shirts because I’m always cold, but a recent shopping trip to Nordstrom with my mom prompted me to get this adorable shirt from Caslon. Anything navy is just begging for me to buy it but I was sold by the cute tie front. Don’t you think it makes what would otherwise be a plain t-shirt so much more fun? I wore the top at least twice (okay three times) the first week I got it…call me an outfit repeater. I have worn it to several events in the past month and am sad to tuck it away for cooler weather.
Now for the rest of the random things worth mentioning…
American Horror Story – In September Jared and I gave Asylum a try and we ended up watching it all within two weeks. Yes, it was very disturbing but it had an intriguing storyline. I found that lacking from the Hotel season so although I admire Lady Gaga a lot, I couldn’t make it til the end. Asylum made you either love or hate some of the characters and I felt so invested until the finale. After we finished Asylum, we started keeping up with the weekly episodes of the current season: Cult. It’s very politically motivated which seems fitting. I’m not sure how I feel about it yet, but so far we have kept up with each episode!
Meal prep – I’ve gotten back into meal prepping and have been enjoying the luxury of grabbing lunch and dinner out of the fridge everyday. During a busy week this has been a lifesaver! Last week we made this really good vegetable chicken noodle soup that lasted through most of the week. For lunches, I came up with a really good and filling meal that was fun to put together. I used riced cauliflower and broccoli (with a handful of steamed white rice mixed in) as a base. Then I arranged the following toppings in rows: tomato, corn, avocado, hard boiled eggs, grilled chicken, and black beans. I drizzled some Annie’s roasted red pepper dressing over the top or sriracha for taste. You guys have to try this!
Favorite restaurants – On the note of food…there were a lot of meals shared with friends this month. I had poke probably 4 times this month which is a bit extreme for me but I finally got to try the famed Seattle Fish Guy’s! It’s definitely my favorite in the area now. Other spots worth noting: Oddfellows, Chelsea Farms Oyster Bar, Bar Melusine, Jade Garden for dim sum, and Sizzle and Crunch.
