I’ve known Grace for over 8 years now, and it only took me about one of those before I realized I was going to marry her. The first time we talked about marriage, Grace was in the middle of arguing with her roommates and took two hours to reply to me. I definitely thought she was coming up with a sneaky way to let me down easy. But as it turns out, she actually did still like me, and now she’s stuck with me forever. (Jokes on her.) But in all seriousness, Grace has been an amazing partner for the past 8 years we’ve been together. I’ve been asked by Grace to write about our proposal from my point of view. I’m not the professional blogger here, so don’t be shocked if my post isn’t up to par! And sorry I didn’t include any outfit photos either.
That’s right…the proposals.
Like any good fiancé to be, I had some elaborate scheme filled with cute photos, a romantic place, and some quality time together. So naturally after intense planning, secret keeping, and finding people to help me set it up, both of the plans fell through…
For those who don’t know, I went to Western Washington University for college, which is up in northern Washington. At the end of August, Grace and I took a day trip up to Bellingham to visit some of our old favorite places. I had some of my college friends help me set up pictures of us, hanging lights, and a big sign, right on the edge of Lake Padden. The plan was to take her there after spending the day going to our favorite parks, coffee shops, and (my) favorite brewery. Now generally August in Bellingham is beautiful. It’s sunny and not too hot. However, this time, the air was filled with smoke because of the fires, and it was raining and overcast. Overall, not the best day. My two assistants texted me saying how windy and rainy it was, and that the plan probably wasn’t salvageable. So, I called it off and we drove home unengaged. Strike one…
The second plan was a little less grand, we woke up and got brunch together, spent the day visiting some of our favorite places, and went to see a movie. During the movie, one of my coworkers who does photography on the side was going to go to Gas Works Park (one of the first places Grace took me in Seattle) and set up the same thing again. Well this time, his grandfather ended up having a heart attack two hours beforehand and he had to cancel. Don’t worry, he made a full recovery though!
So after two failed attempts, I decided I was done waiting, and took her to Gas Works anyway and proposed. We walked around for a bit talking. The whole time I’m struggling to maintain a conversation because of how nervous and excited I am. Finally we got down by the water and I gave her my speech, which I blacked out halfway through, and forgot what I prepared and just dropped down to one knee! I’m pretty sure Grace blacked out well before I finished two words, so it’s okay. When I got down on one knee to take the ring out, my hands were shaking because I was so nervous…so I almost dropped the ring into Lake Washington when taking it out of my pocket. Thankfully I didn’t or I’m pretty sure Grace would have pushed me in after it..
Even after all the mishaps and botched attempts, she still said yes, and we are getting married in August! I couldn’t be more excited, even though there is quite a lot left to plan. We are now only 4 months away from spending our lives together, and it makes me thankful and excited everyday I get to wake up and know who I’m spending my life with.
Thanks for reading and letting me share my glorious proposal attempts! I hope you all enjoyed it. I love you Grace, and thanks for letting me crash the blog.
(Okay, this is Grace now, and yes I cried when I read this. I’m adding a photo of Jared after all because he made a joke about the outfit photo and also he looks SO HANDSOME like hi, hello, super excited to marry ya.)
