I recently spent a (very hot) Friday in Yakima with some coworkers. Although we only had a few hours, we had so much fun! If you ever have the chance to travel to Yakima (aka the Palm Springs of Washington) you definitely should. I hear it’s gorgeous in the fall so I’d love to visit again soon! Here are some photos from our visit to Owen Roe and Dineen Vinyards.
There were many fires across Yakima recently and the photo above shows how close the fire got to Owen Roe’s land. It was still really smokey when we were in Yakima so the visibility wasn’t great. Nevertheless, our tour guide took us through the vineyard on a large utility vehicle and it was fun! Not your typical tasting experience! Kelsey, one of my coworkers, is posing in front of a barrel of wine that says Kelsey on it!
I think we tried between 6-8 wines at Owen Roe but don’t quote me…I definitely lost count! We tasted a variety of whites as well as reds throughout the tour. It’s always interesting to learn about the soils and woods that can influence the flavor of the wines.
We tried a few wines at Dineen as well but mostly we enjoyed tons of delicious food. My favorite part about the food was that it’s all grown locally and sourced from farmers markets or it’s grown right on the vineyard property. Everything from the homemade crackers, to the spicy corn, to grilled eggplant was amazing.
A must see is the sign on the side of the highway that says Yakima is the Palm Springs of Washington too! I thought this was a joke but it’s actually a real sign! It is probably a bit of a stretch, but there are definitely some fun things to see and do in Yakima. Since it’s just a few hours east of Seattle it’s an easy drive that takes around 2 hours.
Have you been? Any favorite wineries or restaurants in Yakima that I should visit next time?
